Ruby, Alaska

While Alaska is on our minds today, here's something interesting. I really like Shorpy, the site that has pictures from around the turn of the century (no, the other century...1900)

Here's a picture that was posted today of Ruby, Alaska circa 1915:

So I decided to see what Ruby, Alaska is up to these days; here's the google map of it:

Not much has changed. It looks like there's an airport (not in this picture.) Pretty neat.

alaska air

From the Seattle P-I, in an article about Alaska Airlines' new way to move passengers through the airport quicker by replacing the traditional check-in terminals with self-check-in kiosks which have been tested in Anchorage. (Sorry for the giant run-on sentence...)

Accounting for 50 percent of all passenger traffic at Sea-Tac, Alaska is the biggest airline at the airport. Around 26,000 passengers — from Alaska and its sister airline Horizon — are served by the airline on a daily basis. They hope to see results similar to Anchorages [sic].

I wouldn't have guessed that Alaska carries that much traffic. Maybe 20%? I'd expect Northwest or United to be larger.
